Played the Main Event today.
Arrived late, rego'd, missing about 40min of level one, which didnt really matter.
I didnt recognise anyone at my table, but quickly it became clear there was no one who I could point at and call a spastic. This enraged me, as I had been looking forward to a fairly easy day of poker.
First hand I involve myself in I make an ace-high call down after saying "well you've either rivered the nut straight or I win". I didn't win.
Next two hands I played went in similar fashion, before I rivered the nut straight against some guy eh eh eh... Basically every hand I played in the first level the other ppl got there; was pretty frustrating, and I went to the first break with around 27k.
I played a hand fairly poorly with TT from the SB which cost me about 5000 chips, and bled in general throughout session two. I became quite disheartened with how my day was going, and played a little too loose I guess, but we were so deep and the hands I was playing were excellent speculator hands, I just couldn't get near a flop. I went to the second break with 18xxx.
The third sesion, things started to turn around. I flopped a set of queens and got a bit of value, and then flopped TPTK with AK and more value ensued. Sickly disappointing to get no value from a set of sevens against the two most aggressive players on the table. I double barrelled a guy in a good spot with air, and went to dinner with 29975.
My positivity and productive play continued in session four, as I picked up a few small pots and busted a shortstack QQ>AQ. I reached 40,000 before losing around 12k with bullets to a guy with a set. Was a little pissed off, and lost another few thousand in the coming minutes raising pre, getting called, and bet/folding flops. In the last hand before the fourth break, it was folded to me in the SB, i have AsAc and raise, the BB defends, and we see a flop of KQ4ccc. All the chips go in, and he has the 98cc. I dont get there obviously, and I trudge off to the break with 4500 chips left, pretty dejected and sad. I had dreamt of playing the WSOP Main event for years, and seeing my maiden attempt at it pan out like it did was pretty soul-crushing.
I chugged a beer at the break and wondered how well I could flip my remaining 11bb in the final session. I did not have to wait very long to find out. My table broke before a hand was dealt, and I moved to table 2, heart of the noob territories. I folded for an orbit before shipping my last paltry 3550 in with KK and getting a double up from 22.
I re-ship on some losers who appear to believe that 4.5-6.0x raises pre are the norm, and suddenly have 11k or so. I hover around this mark until the last 20 minutes of the day, where I raise every hand that is folded to me and chip up to my final standing of 21,500 chips.
We resume day two on Wednesday, with blinds to re-commence at a manageable 250/500-50.
Overall, I didnt play my absolute A-Game I don't think, which is extremely disappointing, but I certainly did not play badly. Pretty sure a lot of ppl would have busted given my run of cards/spots today; so I guess being alive is something chip and a chair yada yada.
Going to play golf at Wolf Creek tomorrow (http://www.golfwolfcreek.com/sites/courses/layout9.asp?id=589&page=31516), which we have all been looking forward to for months now; hopefully I play well there.
Hope all is well back home.
